Above is a picture of the place we are staying. The strange rock formations remind me of some scene from a Star Wars film. There are many caves, some people even live in them.
After a long bus ride we arrived at the town where we will have the art exhibit. Today (Tuesday) is our second day in the small town of 11,000 people. We spent our morning visiting a pre-school and making clay animals with the children. One of the guys on our team is a professional potter who did a demonstration of making pottery for the children. He threw a pot which resembled Noah’s ark and we had all of the kids put their clay animals inside.
Aside from going to the pre-school, we met a woman named Derya and started building a friendship with her. She and her mother have lived in this town for their entire lives and have never even left the town. Derya was probably in her early 40’s and her mother was maybe in her 60’s. Derya only completed a 5th grade education, and because of this she cannot work. She and her mother live in an abandoned home and take care of their animals, mostly cats. I’m looking forward to talking more with her in the next two weeks. For the rest of today I’m just working on art, making a better invitation for the exhibition, and working on basic language phrases because I really want to communicate with the people here. This language barrier is frustrating, I just want to talk to people!
